Since Pomeranians make good watchdogs, some of them were trained as hearing assistance dogs. These dogs help the deaf and people experiencing hearing difficulties by letting them know about various sounds. A phone ring, a baby cry, or the sound of the owner's name spoken by someone prompts a hearing assistance dog to touch the owner, and lead him to the place where the sound comes from.

Pomeranians are also trained to be therapy dogs. They are placed in homes or care institutions to help people recover from stress, and other dangerous conditions.

Still, these activities do not work out for every Pomeranian. The dog must have a sound personality, and get its portion of training. Showing Pomeranians also requires much training and grooming efforts.

The Pomeranian is a good companion for an elderly person. Pomeranians are not recommended for young children, as active children who are not taught to treat toy dogs with respect, can make them nervous and snappish. It takes a well-behaved child to easily make friends with a Pomeranian. Pomeranians are versatile little dogs, but need a firm hand in training.
